Accra’s communities are witnessing significant improvements through various development projects enhancing education, health, infrastructure, and recreation.
Education and Health Enhancements
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has initiated six development projects across the Ashiedu Keteke, Ablekuma South, and Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan Districts. These include renovating a three-storey, nine-unit classroom block at the Private Odartey Lamptey Basic School and upgrading facilities at the Makola Clinic. These efforts aim to strengthen basic services and accelerate community infrastructure development within the metropolis.
Infrastructure Improvements
In addition to educational and health projects, the AMA is undertaking road reshaping, base preparation, and paving along the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue corridor in Accra’s Central Business District. Other works include drilling and mechanizing ten boreholes in selected schools in Ablekuma South and constructing nine water storage facilities in selected markets in Okaikoi South.
Recreational Facilities
The Backyard Community Club in Accra’s Osu neighborhood has introduced a new sports facility featuring the city’s first building constructed with locally produced precast rammed-earth modules. At its core is a red clay tennis court designed for professional doubles and youth training, surrounded by amenities like changing rooms, shaded benches, and a sustenance garden with over 20 species of edible and medicinal plants.
Community Engagement in Heritage Preservation
The Christiansborg Archaeological Heritage Project (CAHP) in Osu focuses on community engagement through archaeology, heritage, art, and education. CAHP collaborates with local residents to create projects that reflect the community’s identity, aiming to empower individuals and foster a sense of belonging.
These initiatives exemplify the collaborative efforts between local authorities, organizations, and residents to enhance Accra’s neighborhoods, fostering a more resilient and vibrant city.
