Community Initiatives Tackle Accra’s Sanitation Challenges

Accra, Ghana’s bustling capital, has long grappled with sanitation challenges, including inadequate waste disposal and limited access to proper sanitation facilities. These issues have been particularly pronounced in low-income neighborhoods, where residents often lack basic services.

Community-Led Efforts

In response, local organizations and volunteer groups have stepped up to address these challenges. One notable initiative is the Buz Stop Boys, a volunteer organization founded in 2023 by civil engineer Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo. This group focuses on environmental sanitation and community clean-up activities, aiming to improve public hygiene by cleaning streets, bus stops, and other public spaces while promoting environmental awareness and civic responsibility.

Collaborative Approaches

Beyond volunteer efforts, there have been collaborative approaches involving various stakeholders. For instance, a project led by local government, community representatives, and waste-service companies tested interventions in inner-city communities. These included mapping households and businesses, encouraging waste-collection registration, raising awareness, reducing waste-collection charges, and developing partnerships between formal and informal sectors. Such initiatives aim to improve waste management and sanitation in densely populated areas.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite these efforts, challenges persist. Many residents still lack access to adequate waste collection services, and landfills remain the primary disposal method. The marginalization of informal waste workers also poses a significant hurdle. To achieve sustainable waste management, experts recommend embracing a circular economic model, integrating informal sector actors, and harmonizing legal and institutional frameworks for effective governance.

Community-driven initiatives, combined with collaborative efforts and supportive policies, are crucial in addressing Accra’s sanitation challenges. Continued engagement and innovative solutions will be essential to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
