Accra’s Environmental Initiatives: Progress and Challenges

Accra’s Environmental Initiatives: Progress and Challenges

Accra, Ghana’s bustling capital, is actively addressing environmental challenges through various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and improving public health.

Beach Clean-Up and Coastal Restoration

In April 2026, a significant beach clean-up and coastal restoration project took place along the Chorkor Chemuena–Lante Maamli stretch. This year-long operation combined mechanized clearing with community action to remove over four decades of accumulated waste, marking a pivotal moment in restoring Accra’s coastline.

Air Quality Management

Accra’s air pollution crisis has been documented for nearly three decades. In 2018, the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Air Quality Management Plan (GAMA-AQMP) was launched, setting out a seven-year roadmap to improve air quality, strengthen governance, and protect public health. As the plan concludes in 2025, assessments are underway to evaluate its achievements and identify areas for further improvement.

Waste-to-Purpose Initiative

In July 2025, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with Eco Earth Foundation and the Miss Earth Ghana organization, launched the ‘Waste to Purpose’ initiative. This campaign aims to address plastic pollution through creative recycling, female leadership, and community education, transforming waste challenges into opportunities for innovation and environmental renewal.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite these efforts, Accra continues to face environmental challenges, including recurrent flooding exacerbated by climate change, fragile infrastructure, and waste mismanagement. Addressing these issues requires sustained commitment, innovative solutions, and active community participation to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
